Genetic and Environmental Influences on Gambling: A Meta-Analysis of Twin Studies
The prevalence of smoking by problematic gamblers was four times the rate recorded for non-problematic gamblers, for marijuana over six times the rate, and for harder drugs, 10–20 times the rate recorded for the non-problematic sample. As individuals transition from late adolescence to young adulthood, increased access and new opportunities to gamble may emerge. For example, many individuals make the transition from college into the work force, resulting in increased financial responsibilities, resources and freedom. Individuals in our sample were passing through the legal age for gambling, which may offer new opportunities to gamble legally and increased financial independence. If candidate environments influencing youth gambling behaviors can be identified, we may be able to design a more effective approach to prevention and intervention efforts targeted for those at risk for gambling problems. In order to utilize a developmentally relevant measure of gambling, our analysis used three gambling variables.
- Socio-demographic questions were asked to illicit gender, age, grade levels, ethnicity, religious background, and familial information like, family type, family monthly income, and highest educational level in the household.
- Areas in which violence and illegal drug use are more pervasive can lead to higher levels of neighborhood stress and disorganization.
- Second, we did not aim to isolate specific environments or genes that impact gambling behaviors, whereas other studies have investigated environmental effects on problem gambling such as traumatic events in childhood in the context of a genetically informed design (Scherrer et al., 2007).
- Understanding the impact of accessibility and availability helps in addressing the environmental factors contributing to gambling addiction.
- The issues of the need to create a comprehensive system of control and analysis of labor and its payment, the combination of state control over compliance with labor legislation, internal control of labor and wages in combination with the use of procedures for the analysis of labor costs.
- Understanding how gambling affects brain chemistry is crucial for developing effective treatment strategies for gambling addiction.
Evidence for shared environmental contributions
Pay attention to the situations, emotions, or people that prompt your urge to gamble. It may help to keep track in a journal or even a note in your phone to help you notice patterns over time. Once you understand your triggers, you can begin to take steps to interrupt the cycle before it starts.
Jordan Wayne, a psychology graduate from the University of Hertfordshire, has a keen interest in the fields of mental health, wellness, and lifestyle. “The goal is not to stop gambling entirely,” says Massachusetts state Rep. Lindsay Sabadosa, a cosponsor of the bill. In the video, the company boasts about getting more people to gamble on sports through what’s called micro-betting during live games. “We drive fan engagement by making every moment of every game a betting opportunity. Automatic, algorithmic, powered by machine learning and AI,” the voiceover says.
The present study is one of the few to model the effects of genes and environment on gambling behavior from adolescence to young adulthood. The results suggest that the underlying etiological architecture of gambling behaviors is similar in men and women, with some age-specific effects. There are few longitudinal twin studies focused on the transition to young adulthood that utilize a youth sample as compared to an adult sample (using retrospective reporting of past gambling histories).
That includes messages on buses and billboards warning people to stop playing when it’s no longer fun and reminding them the odds of winning are very low. The bill proposes a ban on gambling ads during live sporting events, mandatory “affordability checks” for high-spending customers, limits on “VIP” membership schemes, a ban on AI tracking for marketing, and the creation of a national “self-exclusion” database, among other rules. Blumenthal has co-sponsored the SAFE Bet Act, legislation that would impose federal standards on sports betting companies. For example, Norway’s government has a monopoly on all slot machines so it can control the types of games offered, and every gambler in the country is limited to losing only 20,000 kroner (about $2,000) a month.
This is not to say that shared family environmental factors may not be important in the development of DG. In this scenario, the child is potentially exposed to a problem gambling role model and inherits problem gambling susceptibility genes. Our results are also in line with recent estimates on the heritability of gambling behaviors among youth, yet few have modeled change in the estimates over time. The findings of the current investigation (21% at age 18 to 57% at age 25) are within the range of other twin studies on gambling frequency in adolescents and young adults (e.g., 32% heritability for gambling frequency in adolescence; Blanco, Myers, & Kender, 2012).
“The level of gambling has grown astronomically across the country, especially in Virginia, so it is not surprising that more people are developing problems from their gambling,” said Carolyn E. Hawley, Ph.D., CRC, a professor in the Department of Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling at the VCU College of Health Professions. Hawley is also gullybet the president of the Virginia Council on Problem Gambling and the executive director of the Virginia Partnership for Gaming and Health. The program lasts between 10 to 12 weeks and includes individual, group, and family therapy. By participating in the IOP, individuals can receive comprehensive treatment while maintaining their daily routines.
Univariate biometric twin models estimated the proportion of variation in the latent GD liability that could be attributed to genetic, shared environmental, and unique environmental factors, and whether these differed quantitatively or qualitatively for men and women. Psychological risk factors, riding on the backdrop of genetic and environmental factors, add another layer of complexity to gambling addiction. From personality traits to mental health issues, these risk factors can significantly contribute to the development of gambling disorders. Consistent with previous research (Eisen et al., 1998; Slutske et al., 2010; Blanco et al., 2012), the current study suggests that genetic influences may be more important than shared environmental influences in the development of GD. An implication of these findings is that any explanation of the intergenerational transmission of gambling behavior that assumes that the intergenerational transmission is due to family environment rather than genetic transmission will be incomplete (Dowling et al., 2017). Efforts to prevent the intergenerational transmission of problematic gambling by targeting parental gambling may be misguided.
Only 2 of the 6 individuals with DSM-IV PG who were classified with probable mania reported that there was an increase in the frequency and quantity of gambling expenditures during the manic episode. Because there were so few individuals who met this criterion for exclusion, and to maintain consistency with previous research (this exclusion was a new addition to the DSM-IV), we retained these individuals in the sample. The studies indicate a link between change in online gambling involvement during COVID-19 and increased mental health problems (Price et al., 2022), including stress from boredom (Fluharty et al., 2022), and higher levels of depression and anxiety (Fluharty et al., 2022; Price et al., 2022). Several studies have shown a high prevalence of personality disorder (PD) among those with PG, many of which focusing on the association between antisocial personality disorder and gambling (Pietrzak & Petry, 2005; Slutske et al., 2001).

In addition, we explored various types of gambling activities adolescents engaged in. The research findings indicated that the most frequently played gambling forms among the high school students are playing cards, flipping coins, pool gambling and playstation, while Internet gambling is among the least reported. In another study conducted among adolescents in Oregon (Carlson and Moore, 1998) purchasing raffle tickets (41 %) was the most frequently cited gambling activity, followed by betting on sports with friends or relatives (32 %); playing cards (31 %), and betting on games of skill, such as pool or bowling (25 %). Younger adults may also be more prone to gambling due to the evolutionary advantage of status-seeking during peak reproductive years. Cultural attitudes towards gambling can significantly shape individuals’ gambling behavior and attitudes towards risk.
The use of artificial intelligence systems in the world of work affects all aspects of employment relationship – from entering into it to its termination, and also affects the exercise of all rights and the assumption of all obligations and responsibilities deriving from the employment relationship. These issues will be examined by considering the impact of artificial intelligence systems on job security, hiring and performance management of workers working in traditional work environments, as well as through digital platforms. If you’re struggling with how to give up a gambling addiction or you’re wondering how to know if you have a gambling problem in the first place, your first step could be as simple as reaching out.
What Causes Gambling Addiction: Identifying the Triggers
The Massachusetts bill includes some components of the federal legislation, such as mandatory “affordability checks.” Those would cap how much money some gamblers can lose. But public health leaders say the industry’s “responsible gaming” model just doesn’t work. He says his industry group does not collect data on whether those measures reduce addiction rates. The industry acknowledges that gambling is addictive for some people, he says, which is why it developed an outreach/awareness initiative known as “responsible gaming.”
Also, biological data support a relationship between pathological gambling and substance use disorder.32 A comprehensive UK Gambling Commission study from 2018 has also hinted at the link between gambling addiction and a reduction in physical activity, poor diet, and overall well-being. The study links problem gambling to a myriad of issues affecting relationships, and social stability. The availability of gambling opportunities significantly impacts the likelihood of individuals developing gambling-related issues. Easy access to gambling venues, including physical casinos and online platforms, heightens the risk of gambling addiction.
Treatment providers must consider the specificities of people with gambling disorders. Therefore, a strong educational/training background for therapists and other professionals, considering the problem of gambling disorders in the diagnosis, a better adaptation of the contents of therapeutic programs, and the creation of materials used in therapy adapted to the patient’s needs, would be very much advisable. It would also be helpful to establish therapeutic groups, ideally with at least a couple of patients with gambling disorders.
Women showed a preference for easy bets (easy bets are considered safer, therefore, with a greater chance of winning), electronic gambling machines, scratch cards or bingo for reasons other than socializing, earning money, or for general entertainment (Hing et al., 2016a). Women also reported greater problem severity and shorter problem duration, greater pain, and lower quality of life than men (Delfabbro et al., 2017; Kim et al., 2016). Men prefer to bet on EGMs, table games, races, sports, or lotteries and win non-social games (Hing et al., 2016a), and were more likely to exhibit aggressive behavior towards gaming equipment (Delfabbro et al., 2017). Men differed more between problem gamblers and non-problem gamblers, either through signs of emotional distress or trying to hide their presence in the game room from others. Among women, signs of anger, decreased care and attempts to obtain credit were the most prominent indicators (Delfabbro et al., 2017). Pathological gambling increases with the frequency (Cavalera et al., 2017; Hing et al., 2016b; Hing & Russell, 2020) and the diversity of the games (Cavalera et al., 2017; Jiménez-Murcia et al., 2020).

Understanding what causes gambling addiction involves looking at genetic predispositions, brain chemistry, environmental influences, and psychological factors. This article will provide an in-depth look at how each of these elements contributes to the development of gambling addiction. These results indicate that there is no evidence of quantitative sex differences or qualitative sex differences. In fitting a liability-threshold model, a decision must be made about the appropriate threshold to use. Typically, this will correspond to whether or not an individual is affected vs unaffected with a disorder. However, with dimensional diagnoses such as PG, this diagnostic cutoff also represents a count on a continuous symptom scale (ie, 5 of 10 symptoms for DSM-IV PG).
On the other hand, Steel and Blaszczynski (1998) observed that almost 53% of pathological gamblers have non-antisocial personality disorder. A recent meta-analysis highlighted that almost half of pathological gamblers show diagnostic criteria for a personality disorder. The majority of these were Cluster B disorders, such as borderline personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, and narcissistic personality disorder.
